‘If you fall, get back up and don’t give up easily’

THIS week, we share the thoughts and views of ConnectCounty Holdings Bhd executive deputy chairman Ang Chuang Juay.

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
When I graduated from university some 30 years ago, I started my first job as a production engineer with a small contract manufacturing company. My boss, the owner of that company, demonstrated his belief in keeping the business forward regardless of difficulties and obstacles. I learned from him about persistence, perseverance and being a good decision maker.

What traits do you look for in your talent or how do you decide who is right for a job?
I believe in human personality such as loyalty, commitment, willingness to learn and decisiveness.

How do you think the industry you are in will evolve in the future?
The main industry we are in is known as interconnect in general. This industry has been growing over years although growth rates may fluctuate based on overall economic performance. The interconnect industry comprises home entertainment, automotive, white goods, military, etc. and it has a total market size of over US$40 billion and we are just a small player among them. This provides ample room for our expansion.

What advice can you offer those looking to start their career/own business?
Be ambitious and go after your ambitions. Set your mind on your ambitions and pursue them relentlessly. Have the courage and just do it. If you fall, get back up and don’t give up easily.

We all know about the industrial revolution, are we in for a technological revolution?
Definitely. Technology is changing the way we live our lives. I can imagine when programming languages become as necessary and common as that of English or Mandarin. In fact, it is already happening and remains a matter of time for Malaysia to pick up the trends. Technology shall redefine the ways we connect with one another, machines and almost anything.

What do you want to accomplish in the next five years?
Together with my team at ConnectCounty, we would like to take the company to greater heights by offering more products that improves the lifestyle of our consumers. We’ve recently ventured into Internet of Things (IoT) products and we would like to see this segment grow over the next five years. We cannot remain complacent and need to think of ways to innovate and be a leader in our field. We have signed a letter of intent to invest in an American IOT platform company to enhance our ability in the IOT industry.

Best piece of advice you ever got on your career.
To continue moving forward despite the challenges by persevering and being persistent towards achieving your goals. Also, to take calculated risk and make critical decisions. Last but not least, keep yourself abreast of the technology.

How do you stay abreast of issues affecting your industry? Most of the time I rely on my phone or tablet to keep me up-to-date with the latest news or technology. I also subscribe to news alerts and read online newspapers. I subscribe to the most valuable and informative report “Bishop report” to keep my whole crew stay abreast of changes.

If you could have an hour with any thought leader in the world, who would it be and why?
Unfortunately, Steve Job had passed away. Otherwise, I would like to meet him. He was a guy known for his thinking out of the box and very unorthodox styles in terms of leadership and technology ventures, and persuasiveness through his natural speech.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced? and what did you learn from it?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced would be setting up ConnectCounty Holdings Bhd. ConnectCounty was basically a late comer into the interconnect industry in the mid 90’s but I believe there is always a niche market in each in industry and with the determination, the drive and the networks I’ve built over the years, I was able to overcome it. There is not quick and easy guide to start or build a company. We all make mistakes and it is important that we acknowledge them and make sure we don’t repeat the same mistake.

What man made innovation confounds you? Why?
The Internet of Things (IoT). It has revolutionised the way we interact, work, commute and even sleep. Innovations such as cloud computing, nanotechnology, smart grids and robotics has provided us with greater economic efficiency, productivity, safety and convenience. On top of that, mobile technology through wireless connectivity enabled us to connect to the world at our fingertips.

A must-read for every business owner/manager is…
Think Big by Anthony Robbins. You have to set your goals and just pursue them boldly. The book shapes and prepares your mentality for something great in life.

What are the top three factors you would attribute to your success?
The main factor would be my passion for the business. I like to develop products that are innovative and contributes to modern lifestyle. Second would be the determination and hunger to succeed and pushing the limits. Last but not least, perseverance; don’t be discourage because you can’t achieve something today. There is always tomorrow and what is more important is that we continue to try until we succeed, be it in work or life.
